Loretta
Young
Loretta
Young, who shared her January 6 birthday with Joan of Arc, died a few years ago at the age of 87. She was the winner of an Academy Award for
Best Actress plus a handful of Emmys for "The Loretta Young Show," but what I find most intriguing is that
she had a child with Clark Gable in the '30's. Raised as the devoutly-Catholic
Young's adopted daughter, Judy Lewis was unaware of her parentage
before she was about 21. She wrote a biography, Uncommon Knowledge,
which is, unfortunately, no longer in print. One on-line article that
I read about Lewis noted that she has an "uncanny resemblance
to both parents." There ought to be a law against making statements
like that without running an accompanying photo.

"Every
time she 'sins,' she builds a church. That's why there are so many
Catholic churches in Hollywood."--Marlene Dietrich
"Young
was known and derided for her excessive religious devotion in a largely
godless town. During a party at Joan Crawford's house, a guest was
about to take a seat in a chair Loretta had just vacated. Joan rushed
over and said, 'You can't sit there! Loretta Young just got up and
it still has the mark of the cross on it.'" --Mr. Showbiz
(2008 Update) Judy Lewis is now a clinical psychologist, specializing in adoption issues. You can write her through her website.
