January
31 The armadillo is the Texas State Small Mammal. It makes you wonder about the busy-ness of the Texas State Legislature a little bit when you discover that there's a state everything and anything (47 total) in Texas, and all made official by legislation. Of course, maybe I wouldn't think this was a waste of time if the next Texas State Symbol were something I thought up (Texas State Meat? Texas State Non-Flying Rodent? Texas State Beverage?)...
Be sure to click on the pictures as well as the links below the pictures--I've linked the pictures to the sites from which they were taken. Did you notice that although there are only 47 official Texas State Symbols (not counting the Texas flag), there are 48 listed here? One of these is a fake. I'll tell you which on tomorrow's Saint Report. *** Saints celebrating feast days on January 31 include Saint John Bosco, Saint Cyrus and Saint John, Saint Marcella, Saint Aidan or Maedoc of Ferns, Saint Adamnan of Coldingham, Saint Ulphia, Saint Eusebius, Saint Nicetas of Novgorod, and Saint Francis Xavier Bianchi. *** Birthdays today include Stuart Margolin (Davenport, IA, 1940), Carol Channing (Seattle, 1923), Jessica Walter (Brooklyn, 1941), and Jean Simmons (London, England, 1929). Jessica Walter was one of the brilliant co-stars of the underappreciated "Arrested Development," now out in DVD and available from Amazon and through Netflix. *** |
